Empowering Communities

''Blind but still capable''

OUR HISTORY
In 1952 Ivy Kros saw a need to help the visually impaired people.  She started off with knitting classes for 3 visually impaired people; Martha October, Violet Lepuco and Michael Hoeff. As the need grew, more space was needed to accommodate more visually impaired people. De Beers offered to accommodate all people with disabilities at the geology department. After some time, they decided to go on their own and in 1998 public works gave the previous Transvaal Road Primary School for a rent of R1 for use for the purpose of having a sheltered workshop for the visually impaired community. The new center opened for business in 1998.
ABOUT US
30 Visually impaired people were taught a skill of basket weaving. At present the Department of Social Development gives a small subsidy for 20 visually impaired individuals. However, this subsidy being given is not sufficient to keep the center running.  We provide a safe and sheltered working and learning environment for the visually impaired community in Kimberley and eventually the whole of the Northern Cape. We are working towards a better future for them by giving them a chance of independence and mobility. We want to provide programmes and training for them because this is not their last stop as we are the little shove in the right direction.  We are focused on providing the proper foundation for our visually impaired community’s minds and souls. We want them to thrive and leave here knowing that they can do anything they put their minds to. They are blind but they are still very capable. We are here for visually impaired people and will make it our very priority to help them achieve greatness.
OUR PURPOSE
The purpose of NCSB is to provide a safe working environment as well as skills development training to our visually impaired beneficiaries, giving them the necessary means to become independent and work for themselves and becoming successful. We also aim to better the economy by creating job opportunities and giving back to the community.
OUR GOALS
It is our goal and sole purpose to address the poverty and independence of our blind community. We do this by providing a sheltered workshop, skills development and training. We aim to better the economy and equality by creating jobs for them and eventually more disabled people. Our projects will benefit our beneficiaries by providing them with a safe and friendly working environment, ability to grow in the workshop, an opportunity to succeed and give them their much-deserved independence. We will maintain the running of the organisation by ensuring the continuity by implementing adequate/excellent management skills and ensuring that all procedures, policies and regulations are adhered to. We will continue to monitor, supervise and provide necessary training for staff and beneficiaries to better the organisation for current and future visually impaired beneficiaries.
